Let’s discover the story behind the letter Z. Z began with the Semitic letter zayin, meaning ‘weapon’ or ‘sword.’ Greeks adopted it as zeta. The Romans briefly removed Z from their alphabet but later reintroduced it after they began borrowing Greek words again. Over many centuries scribes and artists changed its shape until it became the symbol we see in books today.
