The Montgolfier Brothers' First Flight

In June 1783, brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier launched an unmanned linen-and-paper balloon over Annonay, France, and watched it climb roughly 6,000 feet before drifting back to earth. Later that year their balloon carried a sheep, a duck, and a rooster aloft, and by November two brave volunteers became the first humans to fly free above Paris.

Those first passengers, Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes, stayed aloft for about 25 minutes and drifted over five miles across the city before landing safely. Word of the flight spread so quickly that within a year, balloon-shaped hats, furniture, and wallpaper patterns became a fad across France, decades before anyone could explain exactly why hot air lifted a basket off the ground.

How a Balloon Actually Rises

A balloon rises because heated air inside the envelope becomes lighter than the cooler air surrounding it, so the whole balloon floats upward the same way a bubble rises through water. Pilots control altitude by firing a propane burner to heat the air or opening a vent at the top of the envelope to let warm air escape and descend.

Steering is trickier than climbing or descending, since a balloon has no rudder or propeller and drifts wherever the wind carries it. Experienced pilots read wind patterns at different altitudes and rise or fall to catch a breeze blowing in the direction they want, a skill closer to sailing than flying a plane.

The Wicker Basket's Surprising Strength

Wicker might look old-fashioned next to a nylon envelope, but balloon pilots still prefer it because the woven material flexes and absorbs shock on a bumpy landing instead of cracking like rigid plastic or metal would. The basket in a scene like this one is usually reinforced with a hardwood or aluminum frame hidden inside the weave, and larger baskets are divided into separate compartments so passengers can brace themselves in the corners during touchdown.

A single balloon envelope typically holds between 65,000 and 105,000 cubic feet of heated air, roughly enough to fill several school gymnasiums. That huge volume is why the envelope looks so much larger than the basket it lifts, even in a simple line drawing.

Baskets, Burners, and Modern Ballooning

Today's balloons use nylon or polyester envelopes instead of paper, woven wicker baskets that flex on impact during landing, and propane burners capable of producing over ten million BTUs of heat. Ballooning festivals now gather hundreds of pilots at once, filling the sky with the same kind of colorful envelope shapes the Montgolfiers pioneered more than two centuries ago.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta launches around 500 balloons over New Mexico's high desert every October, drawing pilots and spectators from around the world to watch the hills below fill with drifting color, much like the quiet rolling landscape pictured in this scene. Pilots there rely on a local wind pattern called the Albuquerque Box, where breezes blow in opposite directions at different altitudes, letting a skilled flier drift out over the valley and then loop back to nearly the same launch spot.

Most flights happen at dawn or just before sunset, when the air is calmest and least likely to gust, which is why balloon scenes like this one so often show a calm, early sky.
