Brachiosaurus was a massive sauropod from the Late Jurassic, reaching lengths of about 25 metres and heights of 13 metres. It likely lived in herds and used its long neck to watch for predators and access tree leaves. Unlike most dinosaurs, its front legs were longer than its hind legs, giving it a giraffe-like posture and enabling it to reach high vegetation. Brachiosaurus’s enormous size helped it defend against predators but required a huge amount of food from lush Jurassic forests. Brachiosaurus fossils were first discovered by palaeontologist Elmer Riggs in 1900 in Colorado.

Brachiosaurus is remembered for its towering build, with front legs longer than the back legs and a neck that could reach high into trees. That posture made it different from many other giant sauropods and gave it an almost giraffe-like silhouette. Fossils from North America helped turn it into one of the classic symbols of the dinosaur world.
